Projects Protecting Nature from the Metropolitan Municipality
26.01.2023

Thanks to the "Zero Waste Project" initiated by Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, 35 tons of waste batteries have been collected so far, preventing the pollution of 7.7 million m³ of land. Citizens who have contributed greatly to this environmental movement in the last year were rewarded by Mayor Yılmaz.

Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality has launched a 'Waste Battery Collection Campaign' to prevent environmental pollution, reduce environmental risks, contribute to the circular economy and have a sensitive consumer sense, in order to prevent and recycle waste batteries in nature with zero waste practices within the scope of the "Zero Waste Project". A ceremony was held at the Salih Tozan Culture and Art Center to reward the citizens who participated in the 'Waste Battery Collection' campaign launched in 2022. In the Waste Battery Collection campaign organized by the Metropolitan Municipality between 2014 and 2022, 35 tons of waste batteries were collected and the pollution of 7.7 million m³ of land was prevented. In the campaign organized in the last year, 5 tons of waste batteries were collected and recycled and disposed of. Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yücel Yılmaz rewarded 46 citizens who participated in the campaign in 2022 with tablets, bicycles, reversi, penny banks and roll chess.

A ZERO WASTE CULTURE IS FORMING IN THE CITY

Balikesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yücel Yılmaz stated that each battery thrown into nature poisons 4 m³ of soil and can pollute 600 thousand liters of water, which is enough to fill one third of an Olympic pool and said; “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the waste battery campaign, glad to have you. In order to leave a more livable world to future generations, we are making an intense effort to place the 'zero waste' culture in every aspect of life. We carry out many projects with our volunteers to raise social awareness on this issue. We launched the 'bring the oil, take the food' project, which contributes to both recycling and feeding stray animals. In addition, with the 'zero waste in the kitchen' project, we provide trainings on the separation of waste from the kitchen and its reuse by turning it into fertilizer. We are spreading the zero waste movement, which started in our house, to the whole of our city by growing in waves. Through the 'zero waste in the field' project, we both prevent the pollution of our soil and increase the quality of the products."

'ZERO WASTE STREETS' IN EVERY DISTRICT

Emphasizing that they separate the wastes at the source thanks to the Zero Waste Streets, Mayor Yılmaz said, “We reduce the amount of waste that goes to trash and increase the recycling rate. Through the 'waste-free island project', we made Ekinlik Island, which is connected to the Marmara district, Turkey's first and only waste-free island. But most importantly; we need to learn not to pollute and to keep it clean. This city is our home… Let's all take care of this city as well as we do to our home. You are doing a favor for Balıkesir by separating your waste batteries. Please remember that a clean city is our right. I would like to thank each and every one of you individually for your support to our zero waste campaign and congratulate the 46 environmental volunteers who received the award.”
